Trait Approach of Leadership

What is trait Approach of Leadership?

The characteristic approach to administration was one of the most punctual speculations of authority. This approach centers on the individual traits (or characteristics) of pioneers such as physical and identity characteristics, competencies and values. It sees administration exclusively from the point of view of the person pioneer.

The trait approach began with the belief that personality traits determine whether or not you are a natural born leader. Later, they discovered that situational and personality elements work together to determine leadership. And that person might be a leader in one occasion but a follower in another.

Major identified leadership traits are:

Intelligence: it is defined as having a favorable impact on a person's ability to learn.

Self- Confidence: Another quality that makes it easier to be a leader. It's characterized as "the ability to be creative. "It  permits the leader to be confident in his or her abilities and attempts to influence others are appropriate and proper.

Determination: it is defined as the urge to complete a task, and it comprises traits like initiative, perseverance, domination, and drive. People who are determined are willing to speak up, take charge, and persevere in the face of adversity.

Integrity: it is the trait of being trustworthy and honest. Integrity is demonstrated by those who follow a strong set of beliefs and take responsibility for their actions.

Sociability: it is a leader's tendency for forming good social bonds. Friendly, outgoing, courteous, tactful, and diplomatic leaders exhibit sociability.

Neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness are the main characteristics that make up a person's personality dependability.

This approach primarily focuses on the leader, not the follower or the situation. It underlines the importance of having a leader who possesses a specific set of characteristics in order to lead effectively. Organizations might establish the attributes or traits that are important to them for specific positions, and then utilize personality evaluation tools to see if someone matches their requirements. Personal awareness and development are aided by this tool. Individuals have a better understanding of who they are as leaders and how they fit into a company's hierarchy.

This approach's advantages that it is compatible with the belief that leaders are unique, and that their uniqueness is rooted in their unique characteristics. This method has a measure of credibility that others lack due to the quality and durability of the study line. The trait approach has given us a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of how the leader and the leader's personality are related to the leadership process by focusing only on the function of the leader in leadership. It provides us with some guidelines for what we'll need to succeed as leaders.

However, the trait approach has failed to produce a definitive list of leadership characteristics. The list that has accumulated appears to be interminable. It was also a Failure to consider circumstances the trait method is based on highly subjective assessments of the most significant leadership characteristics. Also it failed to consider personality qualities and their impact on leadership performance.

The research has focused on identifying leadership traits, but not on how these traits affect group members and their work. The trait approach is ineffective for leadership training and development. Certain characteristics are ingrained in you at birth, and changing them is difficult.
